Did you know that over 10 billion donuts are eaten every year? Half of that is probably my fault.
But, as a subject matter expert, I can guarantee that not all donut shops are equal. If you asked me what makes a donut great, is how much love they are made with. That’s why I’m so excited about places like Miss GiGi’s Sweets, in Billings, Montana.
Angela had worked at the original Log Cabin, a local community bakery at the same location. There she learned the secrets to creating mouthwatering confections. For almost 10 years, she worked tirelessly learning the different positions within the bakery and realized how much she loved creating delightful flavors from scratch.
Everything about this place is the definition of “family business.”
When the opportunity to take over the space and open up her own business came, it was an easy decision. Apparently cooking and baking runs way back in Cindy's family and her love and passion for baking rubbed off on her daughter Angela as she grew up. Angela also spent time at a culinary school in Seattle.
Everything about this place is the definition of “family business.” Even the name is part of the family history. When Cindy’s grandchildren were very small, they would call her daughter Angela “aunt Gigi,” so she named the bakery after her daughter.
Not only is Gigi’s family-owned (co-owned with her father, uncle, and boyfriend), they also take care of their neighbors when times get rough. One winter, a customer was involved in a vehicle accident on the way to pick up desserts for his son and he was humbled when a box of donuts showed up to his doorstep after he couldn’t make the pickup.
This is what I talk about when I say that locally-owned independent businesses are about community. This is a family that has lived and worked in the community for decades. Angela and Cindy taking over the original Log Cabin is a sort of passing of the torch. It’s not losing a community staple to a big box business. And because the business is born from the community, it serves them back.
[T]hanks to their regulars and the strong community support, they persevered and are coming out the other end stronger than ever.
Without the community connection, they wouldn’t have made it through the first months of the Covid-19 pandemic. But thanks to their regulars and the strong community support, they persevered and are coming out the other end stronger than ever.
At Miss GiGi's Sweets, each dessert is handmade and freshly baked every morning. From Bavarian cream donuts and apple fritters to cream cheese pastries and caramel rolls, these desserts are just a few flavors you might see waiting for you on the shelf.
